See what members learned in our Perfect Fit: Blouse Workshop—length, circumference, depth, plus sleeve/armscye and shoulder adjustments that transformed muslins.
WORKSHOP

Our Perfect Fit: Blouse Workshop (held in late winter) was a bright spot on the calendar—especially since we didn’t have to fight a snowstorm to get there this year.
The workshop was taught by our own member, Kari Kechter (www.StitchinaFit.com), who guided participants through a step-by-step fitting approach and hands-on pin fitting. The goal wasn’t perfection on the first try—it was building confidence through a logical method that you can use again and again.
The fitting framework we used
We worked through pattern adjustments using three core concepts:
· Length (where the garment needs more or less vertical space)
· Circumference (where it needs more or less width)
· Depth (where it needs more or less room in one area compared
to another area)
Once you start viewing fit through those three concepts, the next
step becomes clearer—and a “mystery wrinkle” becomes a solvable
problem.
Aha moments from the classroom
One of the biggest takeaways was learning that the bodice, armscye, and sleeve need to work as a system. The sleeve and armscye may need to be a different size than the bodice, and adjusting one area often means rebalancing another.
As member Nancy H. put it:
“I really appreciated becoming aware that my sleeve and armscye needed to be a different size than the bodice, and learning how to make that adjustment. And I always love having you (Kari) pin-fit whatever we are making to us! Having our own patterns to work from is so much faster and more encouraging!”
Another participant shared a breakthrough that many sewists can relate to—discovering that a change they didn’t expect made a dramatic difference:
“I was surprised to find that I needed a fairly significant shoulder adjustment. It was amazing at how much better the muslin looked afterwards.”
Student Spotlight: Kristen O. — “Third Time Was a Charm”
Member Kristen O. captured the spirit of the workshop beautifully. She came in feeling a bit overwhelmed (this was her first garment class!), followed the process step-by-step, and learned how a logical fitting approach can turn uncertainty into progress.
“Thank you FOCO ASG for making this Perfect Fit: Blouse Workshop possible! This was my first garment class ever! While I was feeling a bit overwhelmed at first; I just followed Kari’s instructions and tracked along. I only had the slightest notion there were some things you could do to adjust a pattern. The idea of adjusting by Length, Circumference and Depth were new to me; but I have learned the value of following this sort of logic.
My first attempt yielded a very nice bodice, but the sleeves and bodice did not play nice together. Kari was kind enough to spend some extra time with me adjusting the sleeves to match the new armscye and I tried again.
Low and behold, the bodice actually needed some fine tuning, and third time was a charm. Back to the original shoulder seam and sleeves after widening and extending the length of the back and a Perfect Fit was achieved! (with more help from Kari 😊).
I started out feeling unsure about my ability to learn what was necessary for fitting and while I still have a whole lot to learn I feel better about my ability to not only learn what is required; but that I actually enjoy the process and the challenge as well.
I have the perfect fabric in a slightly heavier weight to make this blouse one more time with contracting collar and cuffs and I may try it is a zipper this time for a sort of shackets.”

Why this matters (even if you’re “not a garment person” yet)
If you’ve been curious about garment fitting but felt intimidated, you’re not alone. This workshop reinforced something important: fitting isn’t about having a “perfect body” or being an advanced sewist—it’s about having a method, a muslin, and the willingness to iterate.
When you understand what to adjust (and in what order), fitting becomes less frustrating and far more empowering.
